There’s a trick to running a successful blog that’s so simple and obvious it’s almost not worth mentioning…except it is, because it’s one of the hardest parts of blogging for income and people often overlook its importance. You have to run your blog like a real business. Because it IS a real business.
It’s YOUR business!
So, what do I mean by running your blog like a business? There’s a few elements that separate the part-time blogger – and by part-time I mean, half-hearted – from the professional blogger.
(Don’t worry! Even if you’re a part-timer now, you ARE capable of being a pro, you just need to start running your blog like a business.)
I’m here to tell you how you can start right now and build a foundation for success. So, what do you think separates a part-time blogger from a pro?
Are you thinking the difference is income? You’d be wrong, after all even successful bloggers have to start somewhere (at the bottom).
Are you thinking maybe it’s SEO or followers? Because it’s not those either.
I’ll tell you the secret…
It’s commitment. It’s passion. And, a little marketing.
THE FIRST STEP IS YOU HAVE TO COMMIT TO REGULARLY CREATING CONTENT FOR YOUR BLOG.
It sounds so simple, but the consistency is usually the hardest part for bloggers. You have to make time, every day (at least every week) and write your heart out.
When you stop creating content it’s like leaving a conversation without saying goodbye. The reader doesn’t know whether to expect you back, stick around, or just head off to find similar inspiration elsewhere. That’s a terrible way to build a business.
Example: Imagine your blog is a coffee shop. If you just didn’t show up whenever you didn’t feel like it, would people still come to your shop? Probably not.
Showing up to a locked door doesn’t make people want to come back, it makes them avoid you.
THE NEXT STEP IS YOU NEED TO SELL.
Sell your heart out! But do it by sharing your passion. Let your light shine so brightly through your writing that people are touched by the same passion, the same bug that’s got you.
If you can share your passion, you can sell, and it won’t feel like selling, it will feel like making connections. Because that’s what sales really is!
LASTLY, IF YOU WANT TO RUN YOUR BLOG LIKE A REAL BUSINESS, YOU’LL NEED TO MARKET LIKE YOU MEAN IT.
That doesn’t mean you have to spend a bunch of money or even a lot of time. But, it does mean you need to polish your “elevator pitch” so you can explain what you do and why it’s worth other people doing it too – and you need to be able to do so in one minute flat.
Seriously, one minute.
If you do no other marketing, at least be ready to network with everyone you meet. Share your passion in person, on the phone, through emails, and make sure you can convey your message quickly and clearly.
